I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. (2 Tim 4:7)

How could Paul have made this statement with such confidence and conviction? How could he know for certain that he had finished the race set before him, or even what his race had been in the first place? Many of us long to be as confident of our purpose as Paul was, but the good news is that confidence is absolutely available to all of us. We just need to be sure that we're looking in the right place to find it.

Unfortunately, it's easy to default into looking to outcomes and external circumstances for confirmation of our purpose and direction. When things are going well or when we feel good about our choices we take heart, but Paul maintained his conviction right in the middle of imprisonment, persecution, and setbacks because he knew that our purpose isn't defined by what we DO day by day, but by stewarding what God uniquely placed inside of us through BEING who He created us to be in increasingly transformed and effective ways.

If we want to discover our purpose, the best way to start is by looking at our design. If we went for a walk in a crowded parking lot you could tell a lot about what each car was designed to do by looking at the features that its creators gave it. One has lots of seating, while another has a bed for hauling cargo. One has a low profile and a big engine, while another gets great gas mileage and has lots of internal features for a comfortable ride. In each case, the car's design reveals so much about its purpose, and we are very much the same way.

That's why the Living By Design process focuses on helping you identify, understand, and embrace the various unique parts of who you are in powerful new ways, and then equips you to consider questions of purpose, calling, and direction in light of the question “what will you now do with everything God gave you?”
